According to Jones a line of the government’s no-deal Brexit plan says that it would put a lower tariff on EU exports to the UK than UK exports to the EU, putting UK farmers at a severe disadvantage to their EU counterparts.
Jones said: “This is pretty explosive. We were always worried about this but this is the first time we’ve seen it written down anywhere.
“You could have a situation where the UK government unilaterally disarms some or all of its inbound tariffs and that is the ‘catastrophic armageddon’ we’ve warned about – it’s a really frightening scenario for us.”
Currently no tariffs have been agreed between Britain and the EU, however their introduction would be compulsory should no deal be agreed.
